“For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told” (Ps
90:9).
As I reflect on my pilgrimage of 74 years, this verse becomes more and more real to me. Life is
like a story that is told and even three score and ten years seems so short. The sobering consideration
is “really, what has been done that counts for eternity?” We can easily get caught up in the things of
life that are good and fail to realize the need to “apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Life is serious.
Even as we live this life, we are constantly reminded that our age does not determine when we may
die. Those of ripe old age, young people in the prime of life, even tiny babies are all subject to God’s
call of their soul to return to the one who gave life. As we watch souls pass from time into eternity,
we should be reminded that life is serious.
Death is no respecter of persons and sooner or later we all must answer that call. Hebrews 9:27
tells us that “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” It is of utmost
importance to make our calling and election sure while it is today “for the night cometh and no man
can work.” Life is serious.
I am thankful for the “Gospel story of Love” that was made possible by our Lord on Calvary, that
anyone who will may come and drink from the fountain of Life freely. May we not be satisfied
simply with the knowledge that just ourselves and our families are safe in the fold, but take seriously
the call of Jesus to be “fishers of men” and bring yet many more souls into the fold of the Good
Shepherd. Let us remember, life is serious.
“Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generation. Before the mountains were brought
forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou
art God” (Ps 90:1,2).
